What Is Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)?

Blepharoplasty — commonly called eyelid surgery — is a precise plastic-surgery procedure that rejuvenates the eyes by removing excess skin, repositioning fat, and tightening underlying tissue. It can be performed on the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids, or both at the same time, depending on your specific concerns.

The result: refreshed, brighter, more alert-looking eyes — without altering your fundamental appearance or expression. At ALO Aesthetic in Tijuana and Guadalajara, México, our board-certified plastic surgeons perform blepharoplasty in three accredited hospitals: Hospital DREAMS, Hospital Puerta de Hierro, and Hospital Innovare.

Blepharoplasty Options at ALO Aesthetic

Upper Blepharoplasty

Removes excess skin (and sometimes fat) from the upper eyelid that hoods over the natural lid crease. Restores a more open, alert eye and — in significant cases — improves peripheral vision. The incision is hidden in the natural eyelid fold. Recovery is typically 7–10 days.

Lower Blepharoplasty

Addresses lower-lid puffiness (“bags under the eyes”), excess skin, and tear-trough hollowing. Performed via either an external incision (just below the lash line) or transconjunctival approach (inside the lid — no visible scar) depending on whether skin needs to be removed. Restores a smooth, rested lower-lid contour.

Combined Upper + Lower (Both Eyelids)

Many patients address both upper and lower eyelids in the same surgery — the most cost-effective and time-efficient option. Single anesthesia, single recovery, comprehensive eye rejuvenation. Particularly recommended for patients in their 50s+ with concerns in both areas.

Asian / Double Eyelid Blepharoplasty

A specialized technique that creates or refines an upper-eyelid crease (“double eyelid”) in patients of Asian descent. Performed with respect for cultural aesthetic preferences — the goal is enhancement, not Westernization. Multiple approaches available depending on your specific anatomy and desired result.

Are You a Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

Plastic Surgeon Prepares For Blepharoplasty Blepharoplasty Operation

Blepharoplasty is one of the most reliable plastic-surgery procedures. You may be a strong candidate if:

  • You have excess upper-eyelid skin that creates a tired, heavy, or hooded look.
  • You have bags or puffiness under your eyes that persist regardless of sleep or hydration.
  • You have dark circles or tear-trough hollowing in the lower lids.
  • Your peripheral vision is partially obstructed by sagging upper-lid skin (medically relevant — and sometimes insurance-covered for upper blepharoplasty when documented).
  • You’re in good general health, non-smoker (or willing to stop 4–6 weeks before/after).
  • You have realistic expectations: blepharoplasty refreshes the eye area but doesn’t lift the brow or treat crow’s feet.

Can be combined with brow lift, facelift, or chemical peel for total facial rejuvenation in one anesthesia.

Recovery and Results

Blepharoplasty recovery is faster than most plastic-surgery procedures because the eye area heals exceptionally well.

Days 0–3: Most blepharoplasty cases are outpatient. Cold compresses every 1–2 hours to control swelling and bruising. Head elevated for sleep. Minimal pain — mostly tightness and itching.

Days 4–7: Sutures removed at day 5–7. Bruising peaks at day 3 then begins to fade. You can typically fly home around day 5–7 wearing sunglasses.

Weeks 2–3: Bruising mostly resolved or easily covered with makeup. Return to work and social activities. No contact lens use until cleared by surgeon (usually 2 weeks).

Weeks 3–6: Resume cardio. Final swelling resolves. Scar care begins.

3–6 months: Final result emerges — refreshed, natural, long-lasting. Most patients describe it as the procedure with the best “return on investment” in terms of how much younger they look.

Frequently Asked Questions

All three options. You can have only your upper eyelids done (most common solo procedure), only your lower eyelids, or both upper + lower in the same surgery. Most patients in their 50s+ benefit from the combined approach.
Upper only: 1 hour. Lower only: 1–1.5 hours. Both: 2–3 hours. Combined with facelift or brow lift: longer.
Upper eyelid: incision is hidden in the natural lid crease — essentially invisible once healed. Lower eyelid (external): just below the lash line, fades to near-invisible. Transconjunctival (inside the lid): no external scar at all.
Done correctly, no — blepharoplasty enhances your natural eye shape, it doesn’t reshape it. Our surgeons take care to preserve your unique appearance and avoid the “operated” look.
Most patients describe minimal pain — more of a feeling of tightness, dryness, or itching. Pain is well-controlled with the medications included in your package.
Vision is typically fine within hours. Blurriness from ointment can last a few days. Reading and screens are comfortable from day 3–5 for most patients.
Desk-based work: 5–7 days. Public-facing work: 10–14 days (until bruising can be covered with makeup).
Yes — very commonly. Blepharoplasty + facelift, blepharoplasty + brow lift, or blepharoplasty + chemical peel. Combining is more efficient (one anesthesia, one recovery) than staged procedures.
Upper blepharoplasty: 7–10 years or more. Lower blepharoplasty: often permanent (the fat does not return). Aging continues, but you stay ahead of where you would have been.
In one of three accredited hospitals: Hospital DREAMS in Tijuana, or Hospital Puerta de Hierro or Hospital Innovare in Guadalajara.
