What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty — commonly called a nose job — is one of the most demanding procedures in plastic surgery. It reshapes the nose to bring it into harmony with the rest of your face: refining the bridge, reshaping the tip, narrowing the nostrils, or addressing functional issues like a deviated septum. Done well, the result is a nose that looks like it always belonged on your face — not “operated.”

At ALO Aesthetic in Tijuana and Guadalajara, México, our board-certified plastic surgeons specialize in natural, ethnicity-respectful rhinoplasty. We perform open, closed, septorhinoplasty, and revision cases in three accredited hospitals — Hospital DREAMS, Hospital Puerta de Hierro, and Hospital Innovare.

Rhinoplasty Techniques at ALO Aesthetic

Closed Rhinoplasty

All incisions are made INSIDE the nostrils — no external scar. Ideal for cases that primarily reshape the bridge or upper portion of the nose. Slightly faster recovery and no visible scarring whatsoever. Limited access to the tip means it’s less suited for complex tip work.

Open Rhinoplasty

A small additional incision is made across the columella (the strip of skin between the nostrils). Allows the surgeon to fully expose the nasal framework for precision reshaping of the tip, deformity correction, or complex cases. The scar is nearly invisible once healed.

Septorhinoplasty (Cosmetic + Functional)

Combines the cosmetic reshaping of the rhinoplasty with a septoplasty (straightening the internal nasal septum) to also correct breathing problems. If you snore, breathe through your mouth, or have a deviated septum, this is the right choice. Same surgery, same recovery.

Revision Rhinoplasty

Corrects unsatisfactory results from a previous rhinoplasty. Among the most technically demanding procedures in plastic surgery, requiring careful evaluation of healed tissue, scar, and potential need for cartilage grafting. Wait at least 12 months after the original surgery before revision.

Are You a Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is suitable for both cosmetic and functional reasons. You may be a strong candidate if:

  • Your facial growth is complete (typically 16+ for women, 17+ for men — earlier surgery can affect natural development).
  • You have a specific aesthetic concern: dorsal hump, wide bridge, bulbous tip, drooping tip, crooked nose, or asymmetric nostrils.
  • You have breathing difficulties from a deviated septum or other internal issues that can be corrected at the same time.
  • You have realistic expectations: a rhinoplasty enhances your existing nose — it doesn’t give you someone else’s nose. Our surgeons work to preserve your ethnic and family identity.
  • You are in good general health, non-smoker (or willing to stop 6 weeks before/after).
  • You’re prepared to wait 12+ months for the final result as residual swelling fully resolves.

Recovery and Results

Rhinoplasty recovery has a unique timeline: the splint comes off in a week, but the final shape doesn’t fully emerge for 12+ months.

Days 0–3: 1-night hospital stay then recovery house. External nasal splint in place. Internal packing or splints (sometimes). Cold compresses for swelling. Mild pain, mostly congestion and tightness.

Days 4–10: Splint and any packing removed at day 5–7. Bruising under the eyes peaks at day 3, then fades. Most patients fly home around day 10 with our coordinator’s help.

Weeks 2–4: Bruising mostly resolved or covered with makeup. Return to work and social activities. NO contact sports or anything that could bump the nose.

Weeks 4–6: Resume light cardio (no heavy bending or hot environments — saunas, hot yoga).

3–12 months: Final result emerges as the nose continues to refine. About 80% of the result is visible at 3 months; the remaining 20% (especially the tip) refines through month 12.

Frequently Asked Questions

Closed rhinoplasty: 1.5–2 hours. Open rhinoplasty: 2–3 hours. Septorhinoplasty: 2.5–4 hours. Revision: 3–5 hours.
Closed rhinoplasty: no external scar at all. Open rhinoplasty: a small scar across the columella that is nearly invisible once healed. Septorhinoplasty: same as your cosmetic technique. Revision: depends on prior surgery.
Our surgeons specialize in natural, ethnicity-respectful rhinoplasty. The goal is a nose that fits your face, not a generic “designer” result. We work to preserve your ethnic identity and family resemblance.
Yes — if your breathing issue is due to internal nasal structure (deviated septum, turbinate enlargement). We combine this functional correction with the cosmetic rhinoplasty as a septorhinoplasty. Many patients qualify for partial insurance coverage of the functional portion in their home country.
Most external swelling resolves in 2–4 weeks. The TIP swelling, however, can take 6–12 months to fully resolve — this is why the “final result” is officially at 12 months, even though you’ll see most of it within weeks.
Desk-based work: 7–10 days (once splint is off and bruising is concealable). Public-facing: 2 weeks. Physical work: 4–6 weeks.
No glasses on the nasal bridge for 4–6 weeks. We can show you taping techniques to keep them off the bones. Contact lenses are fine from day 7–10.
Light walking from day 1. Light cardio at 3 weeks (no bending or impact). Strength training at 4–6 weeks. Contact sports: 8+ weeks.
At least 12 months — usually 18 months. The tissue needs to fully heal, settle, and reveal the final result before a revision surgery is safe and effective.
In one of three accredited hospitals: Hospital DREAMS in Tijuana, or Hospital Puerta de Hierro or Hospital Innovare in Guadalajara.
