What Is Lipedema?

Lipedema is a chronic, progressive medical condition — not obesity — characterized by abnormal accumulation of fat in the legs, hips, buttocks, and sometimes arms, while the trunk remains slim. The affected tissue is painful, bruises easily, and does not respond to diet or exercise. Lipedema affects an estimated 11% of adult women worldwide — yet most are misdiagnosed as simply “overweight” for years.

At ALO Aesthetic in Tijuana and Guadalajara, México, our board-certified plastic surgeons specialize in lipedema-specific liposuction using lymphatic-sparing techniques (tumescent + power-assisted) that protect the lymphatic system while removing the diseased fat. We also manage advanced cases involving lymphedema. Treatment performed in three accredited hospitals — Hospital DREAMS, Hospital Puerta de Hierro, and Hospital Innovare.

The 4 Stages of Lipedema

Stage 1 — Smooth Surface

The skin remains smooth but the fat tissue is uneven on palpation. Disproportionate enlargement of the lower body (legs, hips) compared to the trunk. Often misdiagnosed at this stage. Surgical lipo-debulking can offer near-complete restoration.

Stage 2 — Nodular Surface

The skin shows visible dimpling and nodules. Pain, sensitivity, and easy bruising are common. Mobility may already be affected. Lipedema-specific liposuction at this stage prevents progression to advanced stages.

Stage 3 — Large Lobules

Large, hanging fat lobules form, particularly around the inner thighs and knees. Mobility is significantly impaired. Multiple staged liposuction sessions are typically needed. Combined with body-lift procedures for skin removal.

Stage 4 — Lipo-Lymphedema

Lipedema combined with secondary lymphedema. The lymphatic system is now compromised, causing chronic swelling on top of the lipedema fat. Treatment requires lymphatic-sparing surgical technique plus ongoing manual lymphatic drainage and compression therapy.

Do You Have Lipedema? Are You a Candidate for Treatment?

Many women live with lipedema for years before getting the right diagnosis. You may have lipedema if:

  • Your legs, hips, or arms are disproportionately large compared to your trunk and waist.
  • The tissue feels painful, tender, or bruises easily.
  • You’ve tried diet and exercise without success in those specific areas — even when your trunk and torso did respond.
  • You have a family history (lipedema often runs in families).
  • The condition appeared or worsened during puberty, pregnancy, or menopause (hormonal triggers).
  • You’ve been told you’re “just obese” but you know something else is happening.

You may be a candidate for surgical treatment if:

  • You’ve received a lipedema diagnosis (or strongly suspect it — we can help confirm during consultation).
  • Your weight is reasonably stable.
  • You’re a non-smoker or willing to stop 4–6 weeks before/after surgery.
  • You’re prepared for staged treatment (Stages 2+ usually require multiple surgical sessions over time).

Lipedema O Celulitis

Recovery and Results

Lipedema-specific liposuction recovery is similar to standard liposuction but with some unique considerations:

Days 0–3: Outpatient or 1-night observation. Compression garments full-time. Expect bruising, swelling, and lymphatic fluid leakage from the small entry incisions — all normal and expected.

Days 4–7: Daily walks. Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) massage begins around day 5 — critical for lipedema patients to optimize the lymphatic response. Light activities only.

Weeks 2–4: Return to desk work after 7–10 days. Continue MLD 2–3x per week. Compression garments day and night.

Weeks 4–8: Resume cardio. Continue compression and MLD.

3–6 months: Final contour emerges. Many patients report significant pain reduction — often the most life-changing benefit beyond appearance.

Cost of Lipedema Surgery in Mexico

Lipedema treatment at ALO Aesthetic represents 50%–70% savings vs US and Canadian rates. Most US/Canadian insurance does NOT cover lipedema surgery (despite it being medically necessary), so patients pay out-of-pocket regardless. Our all-inclusive pricing makes treatment accessible.

Every quote is all-inclusive: surgeon fees, hospital (DREAMS, Puerta de Hierro, or Innovare), anesthesia, medications, compression garments, and follow-up. Final pricing depends on the stage and number of body areas treated. Most Stage 2+ cases require 2–4 staged sessions. A personalized treatment plan and quote is part of your free consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Lipedema is a chronic medical condition characterized by abnormal, painful fat distribution that does NOT respond to diet or exercise — distinct from obesity. The two can coexist, but they are separate conditions requiring different treatment approaches.
Cellulite is a surface dimpling of normal fat. Lipedema is an abnormal fat distribution disease that causes pain, bruising, and tissue tenderness. Lipedema is a medical condition; cellulite is cosmetic.
Most US and Canadian insurance plans do not cover lipedema surgery despite its medical necessity. This is precisely why traveling to ALO Aesthetic in México makes financial sense — the all-inclusive package costs a fraction of US prices.
Stage 1 patients can sometimes be treated in 1–2 sessions. Stage 2: typically 2–3 sessions. Stage 3 and 4: 3–4 sessions over 12–24 months. Your surgeon will plan your specific treatment course during consultation.
A minimum of 3 months between sessions to allow tissue healing and lymphatic recovery. Many patients schedule them 4–6 months apart.
The fat cells removed do not return. However, lipedema is a hormonally-influenced disease — pregnancy, menopause, or significant weight gain can trigger progression in untreated areas. Ongoing maintenance (compression, MLD, healthy lifestyle) is recommended.
Most patients experience significant pain reduction or complete resolution in treated areas. This is often described as the most life-changing benefit — beyond the appearance improvement.
We accept patients across a range of BMIs since lipedema patients often have higher BMIs from the lipedema itself. Each case is evaluated individually for surgical safety.
Yes. Stage 4 lipedema (lipo-lymphedema) requires lymphatic-sparing surgical technique combined with manual lymphatic drainage and compression therapy. We also treat primary and secondary lymphedema independently.
In one of three accredited hospitals: Hospital DREAMS in Tijuana, or Hospital Puerta de Hierro or Hospital Innovare in Guadalajara.
